According to Statista.com in 2022, plastic waste made up around 15% of the total waste generated in Singapore. For our SSDB project, “Little Green Steps to Eco Best,” we aimed to create awareness about caring for the environment through meaningful community collaborations and engaging learning activities. The children learned about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling, with particular attention to plastic materials.
As part of the project, in collaboration with Sembenviro Recycling League, the children brought recyclable items from home and sorted them into designated bags. These items were later collected by Sembcorp workers to be transformed into useful products once again.
Working with NorthEast CDC, the children creatively repurposed toilet rolls to craft mini recycling bins. They then actively practised sorting materials into bins for glass, metal, and plastic, which deepened their understanding of proper recycling and waste management.
In collaboration with the Singapore Arts Museum through the Think! Contemporary Programme for Preschools, the children explored both art and sustainability. Using recycled materials, they created artwork inspired by touchable pieces shared by the museum. Their creations were later exhibited at HarbourFront Centre, showcasing how creativity can drive environmental awareness.
This project also extended outdoors. The children took active steps to maintain a clean environment by picking up litter during their neighbourhood walks, reinforcing the importance of caring for shared community spaces.
Finally, during our visit to Bright Hill Evergreen Home, the children repurposed unwanted plastics into props for a special performance for the elderly. They also presented a large well-wishing card made from recycled cardboard, spreading joy and demonstrating how small green steps can create meaningful connections across generations.
